Jump Starting Your Fitness
Jump Starting your Exercise Plan
Once you make the decision to start an exercise routine, it’s easy to jump in and go full-force right away. Resist the urge! Doing that might lead to early muscle fatigue and burn you out quickly rather than provide motivation to continue exercising.
If it’s been a long while since you last did aerobic exercise that revved your heart, check in with your doctor before starting a regimen and start very slowly. Begin with walks around the neighborhood or walk on a treadmill before running or jogging.
Another option that might bring fond memories of the past is bicycling. It’s a favorite pastime and a wonderful workout. While outdoor cycling is enjoyable, the weather doesn’t always cooperate. Look into buying a new or used exercise bike.
They come with many bells and whistles, so do your homework before buying. Most are very compact and allow you to read or watch TV to help the time pass. Most are adjustable so you can make pedaling more difficult as your legs get stronger. If you’re looking for a full-body workout, look for a model that provides levers to work your arms at the same time.
One of the best motivators to help you stick with your workouts is confirmation that you are progressing. Track your progress in a journal so you can look back at your achievements. Write down the date, the activity, length of time and resistance or incline if appropriate. Several online applications are available too. Try www.onlinefitnesstracker.com or www.myfitnesspal.com. Set reasonable goals and note achievements as you go.
Next, hydrate! We all know we should drink plenty of water, but very few of us get the recommended 8-10 glasses each day. Hydrating is even more important before, after and during workouts. Strive to drink small amounts throughout the day to get the most benefit.
If you are an older adult, age 65 or older, you might qualify for a program called Silver Sneakers. It’s offered through many health plans and allows older adults free access to gyms, classes and services. Check out www.silversneakers.com to see if your health plan is included.
