Find Relief for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is persistent pain that lasts for months or even years. Chronic pain can occur after an injury or it can develop on its own, and sometimes the cause of the pain is unknown.

Chronic pain affects 100 million Americans, more than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. Common chronic pain conditions include: headache, back pain, neck pain, and arthritis. Living with chronic pain can cause trouble sleeping, low energy levels, trouble concentrating, depression, and lack of enjoyment of everyday activities.

A variety of treatment methods are available to treat chronic pain, depending on the severity of the pain. It is important to remember that treatment is a process. Total pain relief doesn’t happen overnight. For most people, a total cure may be unlikely, but treatment will help to reduce the pain and improve functional capabilities, sleep, and overall quality of life.

If you experience chronic pain, look for treatments that will attack the root cause of the pain. Here are steps you can take to find relief from your pain:

Do your research. There are ways to manage your pain, even if you cannot completely get rid of it. As new treatments become available, it is important to be aware of your options. You don’t have to settle for a life filled with chronic pain.

Talk to a pain specialist. Your regular physician may be able to refer you. Doctors who don’t specialize in pain management oftentimes don’t know how to properly diagnose the pain which can lead to improper or no treatment.

Don’t just mask the pain with medication. In addition to being potentially addictive, pain medications don’t treat the underlying cause of the pain. Also, when you don’t feel any pain, you may cause further injury to yourself which will only make the condition worse. Oftentimes, medications used in conjuction with other treatment methods may give you even greater results than medication alone.

Be open to alternative methods. While medications and surgeries are common treatment methods for chronic pain, there are various alternative methods of treatment, such as interventions and therapies, that may be right for you. Be willing to try alternative methods and don’t get discouraged if you don't experience relief right away. If one method does not work for you, a different method might. Sometimes a combination of methods will produce the best results.

Don't forget healthy lifestyle changes. Taking steps to live a healthier lifestyle will improve your quality of life and help reduce the pain you experience. Reduce stress, exercise, lower your alcohol intake, quit smoking, and eat a healthy diet. All of these steps can help you manage your pain.

Be realistic. Unfortunately, a cure-all for chronic pain doesn’t exist and you may not find a total cure at all. Oftentimes the best approach is continual treatment over the long-term. Managing your pain can significantly reduce the pain you experience, including any side effects from the pain, such as trouble sleeping, and significantly improve your quality of life.
