Grab Bar FAQs

What are the different types of bathroom grab bars?

Wall-mounted grab bars are installed with screws directly into your bathroom wall.  Good places for installation are in the tub or shower, next to the toilet, or in an area where you change clothes.

Suction-cup grab bars cling to the outer edge of the bathtub, to fiberglass, or to certain kinds of tile.  They help you keep your balance, but they cannot hold your full weight if you slip.

What size grab bar should I get?

grab bar As you go about your routine, take note of where you would like to grab onto something for balance or support.  Make a little mark on the wall with a pencil to estimate where you would like to mount a grab bar and how far you want it to extend.  Then measure the space between your marks, and choose a 16”, 18” or 24” bar.

Suction-cup grab bars are available in 12”, 16”, or 20” sizes.  If you prefer a more compact size, pick the Super Suction Hand Grip that’s only as wide as your hand.

How do I know the grab bar will support me if I fall?

  • Don’t trust the suction-cup grab bars to catch you. Their main purpose is to help you keep your balance.
  • Rely on wall-mounted grab bars that are anchored into the wall with metal screws (not plastic). An experienced person must install them by screwing them into the wall studs, a fastener that is up to code, or plywood blocking behind the wall.
  • Confirm the weight capacity of the grab bars before purchase.
